CMM vs Hand Tools: Choosing Inspection for CNC Parts

Short answer: hand tools — calipers, micrometers, pin gauges, height gauges — are fast, cheap, and right for most dimensions on most machined parts. A CMM earns its cost when you need true position, form tolerances such as roundness and flatness, GD&T callouts, or a documented full-part report. The practical rule: use hand tools for length and diameter, and a CMM for location, form, and anything you must prove on paper. What Each Method Is Good At

Calipers and Micrometers

Calipers are the workhorse: fast, portable, good to about ±0.02 mm in careful hands. Micrometers are more accurate on diameters, commonly ±0.002 mm to ±0.005 mm with a good one, and are the right tool for shafts and bores. Both measure size, not location or form.

Pin and Plug Gauges

Go/no-go pin gauges check a hole diameter quickly and repeatably without reading a number. They are ideal for production checking where the answer is simply pass or fail. They tell you nothing about position.

Height Gauges and Indicators

Height gauges establish feature location from a datum on a surface plate. Dial indicators check runout, flatness, and parallelism. These bridge the gap between simple hand tools and a CMM for many common features.

CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine)

A CMM touches points in 3D and calculates size, location, and form. It is the right tool for true position of a hole pattern, roundness, perpendicularity, profile, and for generating a report a customer will accept. When a CMM Is Worth It

A CMM is worth its cost in four situations: the drawing contains GD&T such as true position or profile; the feature is a form tolerance like roundness or flatness; the customer requires a documented report; or a dispute needs an objective, traceable measurement. Outside those, hand tools usually answer the question faster and cheaper.

Accuracy vs Repeatability: Why It Matters Here

A tool can be repeatable without being accurate, and accurate without being repeatable. Gauge R&R studies quantify whether your method can actually distinguish good parts from bad. If your measurement method's variation is a large share of the tolerance, you are inspecting noise. This is especially true near ±0.005 mm, where thermal effects and technique matter. Then sample a few parts per batch as a production control, ramping to full CMM only when a feature is truly critical or a customer requires it.
