Packaging Machined Parts for Export: Protecting Tolerance

Short answer: packaging is the last process step but the one that decides whether a perfect batch arrives perfect. Machined parts face three threats in transit, which are mechanical shock, surface corrosion and humidity condensation. Beat them with part-to-part separation, cushioning foam, VCI film for ferrous parts, desiccant in a sealed barrier bag, and an ISPM 15 crating. A part that leaves the shop at ±0.005 mm and arrives dented or rusted is a defect, and packaging is how you prevent it.

By the time a CNC part is boxed, all the precision work is done, and it is easy to treat packing as a warehouse task rather than an engineering one. That is a mistake. Precision parts are the most vulnerable cargo there is: hard, heavy, tightly toleranced, and often run through multiple handling steps, a truck, a terminal, an ocean container and a final-mile delivery. Here is how to pack so that the tolerance and finish you paid for are still there on arrival.

Why Packaging Is a Quality Step, Not an Afterthought

A machined part is only as good as its condition on arrival. A burr-free edge that gets dinged against another part in a loose carton is now a burred edge. A polished surface that rubs in transit is now a scratched one. A steel part that sits in a humid shipping container for five weeks can arrive with rust spots that violate the finish spec.

None of these are manufacturing defects. They are packaging defects, and they carry the same cost as a machining error: rejection, rework, a resupply, and a delay. The fix is cheap compared with the failure, which is why packaging deserves a line on the drawing or the purchase order, not just a default instruction to the warehouse.

Protection is built up in layers, and each layer addresses one threat. Skipping a layer leaves a gap.

The single most common failure is skipping part separation. Parts packed loose in a box will collide for the entire journey. Even a simple foam sheet or paper wrap between each part eliminates most surface damage. For tight-tolerance parts, custom-cut foam cavities that hold each part securely are the gold standard.

Rust, Humidity and VCI Explained

Ferrous parts, meaning any steel or iron part, are the ones at risk of corrosion in transit. Two defences matter. The first is VCI, or vapour corrosion inhibitor. VCI film, paper or emitter releases a vapour that condenses on metal surfaces and forms an invisible molecular barrier against moisture and oxygen. A ferrous part wrapped in VCI film and sealed inside a carton is protected for months, even in humid conditions.

The second is humidity management inside a sealed barrier. When parts are sealed in a plastic barrier bag, the trapped air already contains some moisture, and temperature swings can push it past the dew point. Desiccant units absorb that moisture, and a humidity indicator card shows whether the protection held. For long ocean shipments of steel parts, VCI plus desiccant inside a sealed bag is the standard, reliable combination.

Aluminium parts do not rust the way steel does, but they can still stain, oxidise or corrode in aggressive environments, and their finished surfaces scratch just as easily. Aluminium usually needs surface protection and part separation more than VCI. Stainless is the least corrosion-prone but the most dent-scarable on polished surfaces, so cushioning and separation dominate.

Crating, Weight and Ocean vs Air Freight

Export crating has to survive three things: handling by equipment the shipper does not control, stacking pressure, and the specific conditions of the transport mode. Wood used in export crating and pallets must comply with ISPM 15, which requires heat treatment or fumigation and a stamped mark, or the shipment can be refused or returned at your cost. That is not optional paperwork; it is a border requirement.

For heavy machined parts, the crate base and blocking matter more than the walls. The part must be immobilised so it cannot shift, and the load must be distributed so the base does not flex. Bolt-down or blocking-and-bracing is worth the effort for heavy or high-value parts.

Ocean freight is the harsher environment because of transit time and the temperature and humidity cycles inside a container. Air freight is faster and gentler on time but harsher on handling, with more transfers and more opportunities for a drop. A part going by air benefits from stronger cushioning; a part going by sea benefits from stronger moisture protection. Adjust the packaging to the route, not just to the part.

Labeling and Shipment Documentation

Packing is not finished until the shipment is identifiable. Every export carton and crate should carry a label with the part number, revision, quantity, purchase order, and a handling instruction such as fragile or this side up. A batch that cannot be matched to its paperwork on arrival creates its own delay, because receiving has to open and identify everything before it can be booked in.

Shipping documents travel with the goods and with the freight forwarder: an invoice, a packing list that matches the carton labels, and any certificate the order requires, such as a material certificate or certificate of conformity. When the inspection report is referenced on the packing list, the customer can confirm compliance without hunting for it. That small discipline is the difference between a shipment that clears quickly and one that sits in a receiving area for a week.

What to Specify on the Purchase Order

Put packaging on the PO in plain language. State how parts are separated, what cushioning is used, whether ferrous parts get VCI, whether a sealed barrier and desiccant are required, how parts are crated, and any ISPM 15 requirement. If the finish is critical, say so and specify scratch-free handling with soft wraps. If the part is heavy, specify lift points and blocking.

Ask for photos of the packing before shipment on the first order. It is the cheapest possible insurance, because a packing photo taken in the factory lets you correct a gap before five hundred parts are already at sea.
