Protection is built up in layers, and each layer addresses one threat. Skipping a layer leaves a gap.

The single most common failure is skipping part separation. Parts packed loose in a box will collide for the entire journey. Rust, Humidity and VCI Explained
Ferrous parts, meaning any steel or iron part, are the ones at risk of corrosion in transit. Two defences matter. The first is VCI, or vapour corrosion inhibitor. VCI film, paper or emitter releases a vapour that condenses on metal surfaces and forms an invisible molecular barrier against moisture and oxygen. A ferrous part wrapped in VCI film and sealed inside a carton is protected for months, even in humid conditions.
The second is humidity management inside a sealed barrier. When parts are sealed in a plastic barrier bag, the trapped air already contains some moisture, and temperature swings can push it past the dew point. Desiccant units absorb that moisture, and a humidity indicator card shows whether the protection held. For long ocean shipments of steel parts, VCI plus desiccant inside a sealed bag is the standard, reliable combination.
Aluminium parts do not rust the way steel does, but they can still stain, oxidise or corrode in aggressive environments, and their finished surfaces scratch just as easily. Aluminium usually needs surface protection and part separation more than VCI. Stainless is the least corrosion-prone but the most dent-scarable on polished surfaces, so cushioning and separation dominate.
Crating, Weight and Ocean vs Air Freight
Export crating has to survive three things: handling by equipment the shipper does not control, stacking pressure, and the specific conditions of the transport mode. Wood used in export crating and pallets must comply with ISPM 15, which requires heat treatment or fumigation and a stamped mark, or the shipment can be refused or returned at your cost. That is not optional paperwork; it is a border requirement.
For heavy machined parts, the crate base and blocking matter more than the walls. The part must be immobilised so it cannot shift, and the load must be distributed so the base does not flex. Bolt-down or blocking-and-bracing is worth the effort for heavy or high-value parts.
Ocean freight is the harsher environment because of transit time and the temperature and humidity cycles inside a container. Air freight is faster and gentler on time but harsher on handling, with more transfers and more opportunities for a drop. A part going by air benefits from stronger cushioning; a part going by sea benefits from stronger moisture protection. Adjust the packaging to the route, not just to the part.
Labeling and Shipment Documentation
Packing is not finished until the shipment is identifiable. Every export carton and crate should carry a label with the part number, revision, quantity, purchase order, and a handling instruction such as fragile or this side up. A batch that cannot be matched to its paperwork on arrival creates its own delay, because receiving has to open and identify everything before it can be booked in.
