Why CNC Price Curves Bend
A CNC quote has three cost layers: a fixed setup cost per order, a material cost per part, and a cycle time cost per part. Only the last two scale with quantity.
Setup is fixed. Programming, fixture design, tool selection, and a first-article inspection report happen once per part number, no matter how many pieces you make. At 1 piece, that cost is carried entirely by that one part. At 1,000 pieces, it is divided by a thousand and effectively disappears.
Material has a mild volume benefit. Buying bar stock or plate in larger quantities typically earns a small discount from the mill or distributor, but this is a few percent, not the 5× swing buyers hope for. Custom extrusion is a different story and needs its own tooling.
Cycle time barely moves with quantity. The spindle does not run faster at 10,000 pieces than at 100. A shop might improve the program slightly once it is proven, but the per-part machining time is essentially flat.

Two things to read here. First, the drop is real and worth chasing — 1,000 pieces can cost less than one-tenth the unit price of a single piece. Where CNC Stops Being the Right Process
Past a few thousand pieces a year, the question stops being "what is your best CNC price" and becomes "is CNC the right process." Progressive stamping, die casting, or injection molding can be one-third to one-tenth the unit cost of CNC at high volume — once you accept the tooling spend and the lead time to first part.
