CNC Quantity Breakpoints: Where Unit Price Drops

Short answer: CNC unit price drops steeply from 1 to 50 pieces, keeps falling through about 1,000 pieces, then flattens hard. The big early drops are setup amortization — programming, fixturing, and first-article inspection spread across the batch. Past a few thousand pieces, material and cycle time dominate and the curve goes nearly flat. If your annual volume is high enough, the right move is not a better CNC price at all: it is switching to a different process. Buyers often ask for "the price at 10, 100, and 1,000 pieces" and then read the numbers as if they were linear. They are not. Understanding why the curve bends tells you both where to buy and when to stop buying CNC.

Why CNC Price Curves Bend

A CNC quote has three cost layers: a fixed setup cost per order, a material cost per part, and a cycle time cost per part. Only the last two scale with quantity.

Setup is fixed. Programming, fixture design, tool selection, and a first-article inspection report happen once per part number, no matter how many pieces you make. At 1 piece, that cost is carried entirely by that one part. At 1,000 pieces, it is divided by a thousand and effectively disappears.

Material has a mild volume benefit. Buying bar stock or plate in larger quantities typically earns a small discount from the mill or distributor, but this is a few percent, not the 5× swing buyers hope for. Custom extrusion is a different story and needs its own tooling.

Cycle time barely moves with quantity. The spindle does not run faster at 10,000 pieces than at 100. A shop might improve the program slightly once it is proven, but the per-part machining time is essentially flat.

That is the whole mechanism: price falls fast while the fixed setup is being spread, and stops falling once it is fully absorbed.

The single biggest step is between 1 and 50 pieces. That is where a buyer prototyping at one piece and needing a small pilot run should push volume up rather than pay the same setup twice.

Two things to read here. First, the drop is real and worth chasing — 1,000 pieces can cost less than one-tenth the unit price of a single piece. Second, the drop from 1,000 to 5,000 is small; you are no longer buying down setup, you are only buying material. That is the signal that CNC has finished rewarding you for volume.

Where CNC Stops Being the Right Process

Past a few thousand pieces a year, the question stops being "what is your best CNC price" and becomes "is CNC the right process." Progressive stamping, die casting, or injection molding can be one-third to one-tenth the unit cost of CNC at high volume — once you accept the tooling spend and the lead time to first part.

The crossover is not a fixed number — it depends on geometry, tolerance, and material — but the direction is reliable. How to Ask for Breakpoints the Right Way

Send one drawing and ask for prices at four or five quantity tiers: 1, 10, 100, 1,000, and 5,000. Ask the supplier to state, for each tier, whether setup is a one-time charge and whether tooling is included. That single answer often matters more than the unit prices, because a "cheap" high-volume quote with a large tooling line can cost more overall than the CNC price you rejected.
