1. Material: The Largest Single Line Item

Material typically accounts for 30–50% of part cost. Two things matter: the raw material price per kg and how much of it gets cut away.

2. Tolerance: Precision Is Bought, Not Given

Tighter tolerance means slower feeds, more tool passes, more measurement time, and more scrapped parts. The jump from ±0.1 mm to ±0.01 mm can add 30–80% to machining time. Below ±0.005 mm you are in grinding/honing territory and the price curve goes nearly vertical.

Practical advice: only call the tolerances your design actually needs. A hole that mates with a bearing needs tight tolerance; the cosmetic pocket next to it does not. 3. Geometry Complexity: Every Feature Costs Time

A simple block with drilled holes is cheap. Add pockets, thin walls, deep cavities, internal threads, undercuts, or 5-axis contours and each feature adds cycle time. Thin walls (under ~1 mm) are slow to machine and easy to distort. Deep holes need special tooling. Undercuts may force extra setups or EDM.

Biggest cost driver per feature is usually cycle time. Ask your supplier for the estimated cycle time per part; it is the most honest single number in a quote.

4. Quantity: Where Unit Price Stops Falling

Setup cost (programming, fixturing, first-article inspection) is spread across the batch. Going from 1 prototype to 50 pcs usually cuts unit price 40–60%. From 500 to 5,000 pcs the drop is much smaller because material and cycle time now dominate.

Sweet spot logic for most customers:

  • 1–10 pcs: prototyping, expect higher per-part cost, that is normal
  • 50–500 pcs: best for custom/small batch without mold investment
