You get part-to-part consistency at ±0.005 mm tolerance and 0.01 mm total runout on rotating surfaces. That means a spool that spins true at 8,000 RPM with zero wobble, and a drag that engages smoothly without stutter. Our standard lead time is 12 days for prototypes, 18 days for production runs. Spool shafts are the most critical part. If the shaft bends, the reel chirps and the line lays unevenly. We machine spool shafts in one clamping operation on 5-axis CNC lathes. No re-fixturing, no accumulated error. Then we grind the bearing journals to 0.005 mm cylindricality. We measure runout on a Talyrond roundness tester, not a V-block and dial indicator. Every spool shaft gets a real runout report before it ships. We also balance spools dynamically to G2.5 grade, so you don't feel vibration in the handle at high retrieve speeds.
Spools and side plates: 7075-T6 aluminum, yield strength 503 MPa, anodized to 50 µm hard coat for saltwater resistance. Gears: 17-4PH stainless steel, precipitation hardened to 40-48 HRC, then electropolished for a 0.2 µm Ra surface. Shafts: 316L marine-grade stainless, passivated per ASTM A967. Handles and knobs: 6061-T6, black anodized, with a knurled grip that hits 3.2 µm Ra — no slip, no sharp edges. For freshwater reels, we can swap to 6061-T6 or 2024-T4, but 7075 is the default because it holds threads better when you torque the drag star.
Drag knobs get threaded and unthreaded hundreds of times. Cut threads have a 45-degree shear line — they strip. We roll threads on all drag knobs and handle nuts. Rolled threads are 30-40% stronger because the grain structure follows the thread profile, not cuts across it. We hold thread pitch to ISO 6H tolerance, and we verify with a thread plug gauge on every single piece, not a sampling. If you're designing a drag knob that needs to survive 500 full-torque cycles, specify rolled threads. We do it as standard.
Line roller and bail arm surfaces are where your line touches. A rough surface (above 0.8 µm Ra) creates friction, which reduces casting distance by up to 15% and wears braided line faster. We machine these to 0.4 µm Ra and then polish to 0.2 µm Ra with a ceramic media. Spool bores get 0.8 µm Ra — smooth enough for line flow, but not so polished that the line slips. We also deburr every edge to 0.1 mm radius, so there is no single sharp point that can nick a mono filament. You can check this with a fingernail — you won't feel a catch.
We run a 3-step inspection on every batch. Step 1: CMM (coordinate measuring machine) checks on critical dimensions — spool bore, shaft OD, gear pitch diameter — against your drawing. Step 2: Optical comparator for thread forms and undercuts, at 20x magnification. Step 3: Salt spray test per ASTM B117 on a sample from each batch — 96 hours for aluminum, 200 hours for stainless. We send you a full inspection report with photos of the CMM screen. If a part is out of spec, we sort it out before packing, not after you complain. Our defect rate is 0.3% — that's 3 parts per 1,000.
You send a STEP or IGES file. We review it for manufacturability within 4 hours — we flag thin walls, deep pockets, or tolerance issues that will cause problems. We quote firm within 12 hours.
